traveling and physBAM

So how was your Christmas? Mine was pretty good, even though I was sick with the flu for 3 out of the 4 days we were in New Orleans. But Jess’s Mom pumped me full of sudo FDA approved drugs and I’m all better now. We had a really good time. Lots of great food, great company, and relaxation. It was weird not being in the north with my family for a winter holiday, but Jess’s family made me feel right at home. And I must admit…warm weather again wasn’t all that bad. The highlight of the whole trip had to be watching the holiday staple “Christmas Vacation” in Jess’s Dad’s brand new home theater. This thing was official man. 100 inch screen, 1080p HD projector, and a sound system that would make George Lucas cream in his pants. I really did forget more than once that I was in a house. So cool.

So thanks again to Jess’s family for having me down south and getting me feeling better. I had a really great time and can’t wait to see you guys when you trek up here for vacation.

Now onto to buisness…

I was watching WiredScience last night on PBS, which is fast becoming a favorite show of mine, and they had a great segment about physics simulation advances in visual effects. That led me to this article on Wired.com today about the advances that have been happening in fluid simulation at Autodesk and ILM.

LINK: The Software That Will Take Digital F/X to the Next Level of Awesome

It talks about Nucleus and PhysBAM. Which even if you haven’t heard of, I know you’ve seen. ILM has been teaming up with Stanford and using PhysBAM for movies like “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”, “Poseidon”, and “Pirate of the Caribbean: At World’s End”.

We’ve been checking out the simulation videos that the creator of PhysBAM, Ron Fedkiw, has on his site. And they’re just beautiful. So check ‘um out. Here are a few of our favorites, but a TON more can be found on his site. Just follow the link above.
