circus “freaks” and 3D burlesque shows
I was doing research today while waiting on renders, for a new side project I’m starting. It’s going to be a series of portraits of Sideshow “freaks”, courtesy of ZBrush 3 and 3DS Max. It’s finally going to give me an excuse to learn Max, and hopefully get me out of this artistic rut I’m in. Anyways, I google’d “carnival sideshow portraits” and I came across the artist blog of cartoonist Terry Beatty.

He’s got this 1950′s Hammer Horror/SciFi movie style that I really love. He’s currently a “visiting artist” in the comic art program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. And his blog is just full of beautiful art. Life drawings, ink drawing, maquettes, copper statues, you name it man. I’ve been digging around his site for the past half hour and my mind is just spinning with new ideas.

One of the coolest things I found though, has to be some of the pictures he posted of a 3D Burlesque show.

It’s a local Minneapolis company that teams up with dance troops and actors, and puts on old school 3D shows around the town. Nothing but a white sheet and a bi-optical projector. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and it’s just so outside the box that I’m fascinated with it. There’s just something so campy about it that it’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while.
Anyways, thought I’d share. I’ll be posting some sketches a little later on in the week as I get more ideas for this tentatively titled “Sideshow Project”. I’m really excited about this. I’ve been waiting for something to spark my interest for a while.

I’m working on a couple Nuke Tutorials to post for you guys as well. One on adding 3D motion blur to your comp using .chan file data from your 3D camera. And another about how to use fractals in your comp for certain animation effects. Whether it’s heat distortions coming out of a jet engine, or just adding some motion to background tress making them sway in the wind. This is an awesome technique I just used for a big project coming through the studio. So look for those coming soon!
