
Well it looks like this is just the month for awards! I just got word that ‘Dinosaurs 3D – Giants of Patagonia‘ has been nominated for a Visual Effects Society award in the category of ‘Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project’. And ironically enough, it was 1 year ago today that I trekked up to Quebec to help finish up the film. I can’t believe it’s been a year already. It feels like it was a life time ago, and also like it was just yesterday that I was eating Tim Horton’s and working with some absolutely amazing artists.

So congratulations to everyone at Studio Virtuel Concept (SVC) for this really amazing accomplishment! You guys really deserve it and it was a true pleasure working with you for the time that I did.

(January 9, 2008) – Four specialists in the Visual Effects industry originating in Quebec have been nominated for a Visual Effects Society award, and will represent their colleagues in the category of ‘Outstanding Visual Effects in A Special Project’ The judges thus recognize the added value of the special effects carried out by Studio Virtuel Concept for the IMAX film ‘Dinosaurs 3D – Giants of Patagonia’. Also recognizing Marc Fafard, also of Quebec.
The VES is the most important international association of professionals in the Industry of the Cinematographic Special Effects. Richard Bergeron, Martin L’Heureux, Vincent Roberge, and Mario Couturier saw their work in front of a jury of experts on January 5th in Burbank, California. This nomination attests the artistic value, the complexity of the stereoscopic effects, and the quality of animations carried out on this film, produced by Sky High Entertainment. They are in competition against ‘Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor Show’ produced by Pixar/Disney. And ‘Sea Monsters’, produced by the National Geographic Society. The winner will be revealed on February 10th at a banquet in the prestigious Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.
In different categories, ‘Spider-Man 3′, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’, ‘The Compass Golden’, ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Shrek the third’, ‘Beowulf’, ‘Die Hard 4′ and ‘Transformers’. Steven Spielberg will be present and receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award.
According to Mario Couturier, president of Studio Virtuel Concept (SVC) and Executive Producer of the Special Effects on ‘Dinosaurs 3D’, this setting in nomination constitutes another turning point in the growth of the visual effects in Quebec. “Even if we do not win, the fact of being nominated constitutes international recognition of the scale of our work. All the artists having worked on this project can be proud of the colossal work which they achieved. We owe this nomination to their great talent and their perseverance.” Martin L’Heureux, President of d’ Imperia Media in Vancouver, and Director of Animations on ‘Dinosaurs 3D’, is also very proud of this nomination.
SVC and Imperia are of process of fusion and all the operations, within the framework of the productions to come from now on will be centralized in the town of Quebec. Originating in Charlesbourg, it gained in the past a CLIO award, AICP/Moma Award and Anicomm Award for the exceptional quality of its animation.
