Well I’m at work right now and rendering off my very first shot! It’s of this big dinosaur checking out here eggs while one of them hatches. It’s pretty cool, and I’m getting to used to it up here. But it was a long hard road man. Here’s the story.
Jess dropped me off at the airport (which was very sad) for a 11am flight. My flight didn’t end up taking off until…3pm. That meant I missed my connecting flight in Chicago. Which means, unlike my bags, I got flown to Toronto, and they went to Ottawa. Well correction, they stayed in Chicago for another day THEN went to Ottawa. I finally land in Toronto at 11pm and start to go through customs, where I almost got deported. I didn’t have all the proper papers to come to work up in Canada, so they detained me for 2 hours in an immigrant holding area. Yep, you heard me right. An immigrant holding area. Luckily there was a very nice boarder patrol officer (never thought I’d say those words) and she processed my work permit. Now it’s 1am and I haven’t eaten all day and I’m stuck in Toronto with no way of getting a reservation for a connecting flight until 6am. So…I sat. For a looonnnngggg time. Then 8am came around, and I finally got a flight. 2 hours later, I land in very snowy…kind of ugly…Quebec city, and I went straight to work. Where I worked until 9pm that night. By this time I hadn’t slept in over 24 hours, I had no clean clothes, no deodorant, no food, nothing. And I hate to say it, but I smelled very french. This smelly ordeal went on until just yesterday, when my bag finally arrived. And I have to tell you, that was the best damn shower ever.
And so…here I am for the next 3 weeks. In a all French speaking city, where it’s very cold, and I’m a foreigner. Luckily, everyone I’m working with is actually very nice. And thank god for that. Because if I was surrounded by mean people, I just don’t know what I’d do. Probably have that nervous breakdown that I just narrowly avoided in the Immigrant holding area. God that was horrible. At least I’m finally getting cool ass 3D IMAX Dinosaurs on my reel! I’ll post some stills after my contract is over and the movie is released on March 1st (confidentiality…you know).
Anyway, that was my weekend. How was yours?
Wow what a trip. Nice to know you made it up there in time. What kinds of papers do you need to work in Canada anyways? I’ve been looking at some VFX houses in Toronto.
