l’amie de zoe

Like the story usually goes, one of the artists here at the studio passed this along today. And I’m so happy he did, becuase “L’amie de Zoe” is one of those wonderful visual gems that you stumble across every now and then. And so I wanted to pass it along to you as well!

The studio responsible for this short film is called MAKE. They’re based out of Minneapolis and home to one of my favorite CG artists Tyson Ibele. Tyson was in fact credited as one of the artists on this piece, and I must admit that I’m not surprised. If you’ve ever seen any of his work before, then you’ll easily see his fingerprints all over the screen. Which is a good thing, ha.

MAKE is a design studio that specializes in the art of storytelling through motion graphics, visual effects, and animation.
We believe the most rewarding work stems from a strong sense of teamwork, collaboration with our clients, and a desire to make something fresh and compelling.

Another notable artists listed in the credits is an Illustrator by the name of Matt Roussel. I couldn’t find out much about him, but going through his portfolio I was stunned at how beautifully his style was translated by the artists at MAKE. Check it out for yourself…

The character design is so simple, yet polished. Which reflects the very simple, yet polished story. With those two things working in combination, there is just something so charming and wonderful about this film.

So please check it out and I hope you enjoy the next few minutes as much as I did. Great work!

“L’amie De Zoé” is an animated short story about friendship. Life in Zoé’s world is green and ordinary. When a red family unexpectedly lands on her planet, Zoé makes a new friend. While teaching her friend, Maho, all about her world, Zoé realizes that being green is not ordinary to everyone.
Working closely with illustrator Matthieu Roussel, MAKE created a wonderous moving world from Roussel’s book “L’amie de Zoé”. By bringing Zoé’s green world from the page to the screen, the team at MAKE were able to add layers of interactions and emotions not achievable in printed form. Even the planet itself becomes a character. It affects the characters’ lives and behaviours. Using Roussel’s book and vision, MAKE brought “L’amie de Zoé” to life.
